Stop Tweeting Celebrities.

Whenever someone that doesn't have a Twitter account asks me about Twitter, one of the first things I always say is: "It's an open communication platform, allowing you to communicate your thoughts and ideas to a large audience, and converse with people all around the world you wouldn't usually have an opportunity to talk to. Like celebrities."

Well, it's all bull.

I bring up the celebrity bit to pull them in, in case they weren't interested by the first part, but that's simply because I have an unfounded urge to sell things to people. More about that another day.

But I really do want people to try Twitter, so I throw in the prospect of a tweeting encounter with their favorite floating head. I shouldn't do it.

I'm setting people up for disappointment. A disappointment I've experienced firsthand.

I should know better.

Sure, celebrities might tweet you. And you might think that's awesome.

But it's not. It's definitely not.

I'm still a little tender about the whole thing.

Making contact with a celebrity could be a life-changing moment. It should be. They've got a bunch of money, or at least some sweet contacts, and either way, they could literally hook you up.

But they just give you a little tweet; a tiny little tweet, instead.

It'll feel real cool for a second. For a second, you might think you know them, and they know you now. Nah. You're just another tweeter. Move on with your life. They certainly will.
